KATIE KILBOURN, Artistic Director, Co-founder

Katie Kilbourn, a Sacramento native, began her dance journey on the West Coast before earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Dance Performance from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. After relocating to New York, she danced with several companies, including Balasole, J/D Dansfolk, and IKADA. Throughout her career, Katie became increasingly aware of the pressure to conform to certain body standards, a challenge she personally faced.

In 2015, Katie co-founded Borne Dance Company with Kianna Moye, focusing on mental health and eating disorder awareness. As Borne's Artistic Director for six years in New York City, Katie led the company in promoting body positivity, self-acceptance, and recovery through dance. Drawing from her personal experiences, she collaborated closely with therapists to create therapeutic workshops that inspire compassion and understanding. Her commitment to this cause was further developed by her four years of volunteer work with the National Eating Disorders Association.

After her time in New York, Katie returned to Sacramento, where she opened a second branch of Borne Dance Company. Along with Borne, Katie is extremely passionate about arts education. She continues her work as an educator, teaching at the School at the Sacramento Ballet and with the Teaching Artist Company at the Clara. Now, as the owner of the Borne Arts Collective in East Sacramento, Katie fosters a welcoming and healthy environment where dancers of all ages can explore their passion for movement. Lelo Jamison

Apprentice

Lelo got her start in cheerleading in elementary school performing in the largest and oldest football, cheerleading, and dance organization, Pop Warner. In addition to performing at halftime and on the sidelines, she was also a Competitive Cheerleader. In high school she started on the Jr. Varsity cheer team, and worked her way up to Varsity by junior year.

Lelo has struggled with Anxiety and Depression throughout most of her life - though she was not aware that’s what she was experiencing until a few years after high school.

Following high school, Lelo stopped cheerleading as a result of her disorder(s) and remained inactive. 3 years ago, she found a TikToker named Lemongrasses, who was diagnosed with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), and was getting back into Ballet as an adult. Lelo found inspiration in seeing their progress in Ballet and in following their journey living with DID. From there, she started taking Ballet classes at 25 - as an adult who had no prior dance experience aside from cheer.

Thereafter, she found Contemporary, which is what she would come to use as an escape/release from the struggle of living with severe mental illness. She continued taking classes in any and every style she had access to. From Modern to Acro, Heels to Ecstatic, Line Dancing and U-Jam, to partnered styles such as Salsa, Bachata, Zouk, Cumbia, Cha Cha, West-Coast Swing, and the like, she found safety in the release dance gave her from the difficulties of mental illness.

In the last year, at 27 years old, Lelo was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks, and Insomnia. She started going to both group and individual therapy, in addition to starting psychiatric medication for the first time. She plans to utilize dance as a means of healing and expression for the rest of her life. Despite primarily dancing recreationally, Lelo is very intentional about being in class and in ensuring she makes the most out of the classes she takes. Her goal is to reach people through movement.

This makes her SO grateful for the opportunity to dance with Borne Dance Company. She looks forward to opening up the discussion for advocacy of mental health issues and eating disorders from lived experiences through communal efforts and love.
